West Berkshire's biggest ever paperchain

Berkshire Women’s Aid in top national honour

West Berkshire's biggest ever paperchain

Friday 12th November saw the largest paperchain ever seen in West Berkshire. The paperchain was made of 8,000 views of children and young people.

The paperchain is the brainchild of Tanya Honor BACYP’s Participation Worker as part of Takeover Day 2010. The concept was to get the views of Children and Young People across West Berkshire to see what could be done to make their lives better.

Every school is West Berkshire was invited to take part in the event that was designed to help gain views of children and young people which can help better shape services.

In the current climate, it is essential that services best reflect the needs of the people they serve. More effective services, can be more efficient making sure that services meet actual need rather than perceived need.

During Takeover week young people wrote their views on paperchains which were collected together to make one large paperchain snaking from the Town Hall in Newbury, through Town to the Council Offices at Market Street. Over 50 volunteers from the council and organisations and services that work with young people came to help link up the paperchains, which was led through the town to Cllr Graham Pask, Chairman of West Berkshire Council at Market Street Offices.

Cllr Pask said “We are delighted to have been part of this initiative that has given every child in the District the opportunity of having their voice heard by telling us how we can make their lives better”

Despite his efforts Tamuka missed out on the title, losing 21 points to 6. Tamuka was highly commended for his efforts, especially due to his inexperience in Finals.

Tamuka was Berkshire’s only Finalist having had 4 lads in the semi finals.

BACYP Berkshire athletics Championship 18/05/2011

On the 18th of May BACYP held its annual Athletics championship.   There was a great turn out of over two hundred athletes and many more supporters cheering them on.  The events were hard fought with multiple heats and tough finals.  Congratulations for all that managed to get a medal.  Those that won gold medals have been invited to represent Berkshire at the CYP National Athletics Finals in July.  A big thank you goes out to all the coaches, parents, SPLAT team staff and most of all the officials.  Without all that helped out, the night wouldn’t have been the success it was.    I hope that next year we can make the event even better and our best wishes for the athletes competing at the nationals.
